Retirees often claim to be busier retired than they were working. In some ways, I too feel that way. Writing - mostly on the 3rd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry regiment, a Civil War unit - takes the most time, or should. Competition for time comes from several speaking engagements - I have trouble saying “no” to an audience, and from my  teaching courses on the (American) Civil War for the The Selim Center for Learning in Later Years” (formerly the Center for Senior Citizens’ Education). Each fall between 2011 and 2015, we will cover a year of the war, and selected topics which fit that year.

I am the Great Plains Regional Coordinator for the Society for Military History, and supervise the SMH Conference Coordinators who organize SMH sessions at the Northern Great Plains and Missouri Valley History Conferences. The Twin Cities Civil War Round Table, Inc. keeps electing me a director, probably because I served previously as Vice President, President, and “Humanist in Residence” with the TC CWRT. Representing the TC CWRT, I co-chair the annual Fort Snelling Civil War Symposium.

A member of the executive board of the Dr. Harold C. Deutsch World War II History Roundtable, after previous service on the advisory board, I usually take money at the door before each session. Since 1984, I have volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, and currently serve on Eagle Boards of Review as a District Member-at-large in Chief Black Dog District, Northern Star Council.
