Civil War Series and Logo    The American Civil War Series    War for the Union graphic

Instructor: Dr. Joe Fitzharris

Series Concept:

In 2010, I proposed that the Selim Center offer a program on the American Civil War that, in view of the Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) celebrations, should extend over the five years of the sesquicentennial. This idea was approved after discussion. The events of each year form part of the program and additional topics are included. For example, in 2013, we will examine Women, Religion, and Freedmen-Black Troops, and the three critical campaigns of 1863: Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Tullahoma-Chattanooga.

Course Content:

    First Year (2011): 1861

    Second Year (2012): 1862

    Third Year (2013): 1863

Guides and References for the Tourist Going to Battlefields

If you plan to visit battlefields, I strongly urge you to check this page and to utilized the items referenced. Even if you have visited the site before, these things will enhance your visit. Even a guided tour will be enhanced by using these references before going, and I suggest taking the relevant ones with you as a ready reference.
